For me, this book is more than one I read; it's one I actually use. It's never far from my desk. It's my go-to reference source when I don't know how to write my way out of a corner. It's the thing that helps me make something ordinary into something else--something better. I love this book. I've been relying on it for years.
I did not find this book helpful at all. This is one of the worst writing books I have ever read. I purchased this based upon it being mentioned on the BluRay for the television show LOST. I really admire the writing on the show, and thought that this might be a personal recommendation by the show's writers. I am vastly disappointed with the book. I did not find one single part insightful. Other writing books that I would recommend instead would be any of the books by Noah Lukeman, but especially A Dash of Style. Another one that I would highly recommend is Techniques of the Selling Writer by Dwight Swain. All of these are worth their weight in gold. Skip this book.

Elements of the Writing Craft is well written and contains so much useful information about writing. The pace of information is perfect and the writing examples are very thorough. This book is a keeper for anyone interested in the writing profession.
There are a lot of how-to books for beginners on how to write fiction and non-fiction, but very few for the more advanced writer who wants to excel--that is, until a writer friend discovered and referred me to Robert Olmstead's "Elements of the Writing Craft." It was like discovering a rare jewel. Best of all, it was easy to read and easy to follow the well-planned exercises.

The book is incredible, analyzing works of the masters. Olmstead fills the book with exercises the author can apply to their own work. His guide to better writing has been an incredible help to me, and I highly recommend this one-of-a-kind book to develop better writing skills.
