This is not just a story about coming out of a religion, cult or as gay from a religious environment -- it's a story about escaping the bonds the world can place upon us, how to listen to our inner voice, and find and embrace our true passion and happiness. This is the story of how one man was raised in a fundamentalist Christian cult -- the Worldwide Church of God (Armstrongism) -- as the son of a pastor, later leaving organized religion, and then came out of the closet as gay after marrying a woman and having three sons (and remaining close friends with his ex-wife). He learned along the way that cults and closets come in many forms. He shares his story in hopes others will find the courage to liberate themselves and support others in the process, and ultimately find true peace. One reader wrote “…captivating and hard to put down…his book has a wide appeal to a variety of audiences, including clergy, lay leaders and youth pastors, as well as therapists, social workers and clinicians. Those who are interested in cults, extreme religious fundamentalism, spiritual abuse and abusive institutions or systems will find the book useful. Finally, anyone -individuals, parents, spouses– struggling with issues of sexual orientation will find the author’s story not only helpful, but inspiring and life-changing.”

Cults and Closets Coming Out of Chaos Troy Fitzgerald 9781492176336 Books Reviews
"Cults and Closets" is an intriguing memoir about a boy growing up in a cult where his father was dictator/pastor, never feeling like he really fit in with anyone or anywhere. Eventually coming out of both the cult and the closet, the author tells his story in a way that is raw and sometimes even uncomfortable. Troy Fitzgerald recounts rejection after rejection, failure after failure in his journey toward breaking free of the confines of society and its expectations in a way that is almost too painful to read.
For someone like me who grew up in the same church as the author, reading what went on behind the scenes, behind the curtain, so to speak, was eye-opening. It is always hard to imagine those we see as "having it all" really don't, and are probably suffering just as much as the rest of us. This book invokes compassion in me that I didn't know existed and made me re-think perceptions and how skewed they can be.
"Cults and Closets" is written in a way that makes you really become emotionally involved to the point you are almost begging for a happy ending, an end to the suffering, but life doesn't always give us that. What the reader gets instead is a wonderful example of courage. Blow after blow, Troy keeps getting back up and fighting for what he truly wants to do and truly wants to be. I have nothing but respect for Troy.
The author wants his readers to feel the pain as he did and experience the struggles and the joy of finding oneself amidst chaos; life at its worst and life at its best... A fascinating, captivating, sometimes painful, wonderful must-read.
Former WCG kid and son of a pastor, Troy Fitzgerald explains what it was like growing up in a fundamentalist religious cult.
This book is a very interesting read. Troy relates from the times of his early youth, what it was like growing up in a fundamentalist church. Feelings of social inadequacy, and shunned with no true friends. This young man searches out his own self identity, leading to an unexpected discovery as to his sexuality.
As the Worldwide Church of God (founded by Herbert W. Armstrong) goes through an identity crisis, Troy begins to think outside the box that was constructed for him in his childhood and begins to think of himself as a closet agnostic with huge doubt about his religious education.
After leaving the Worldwide Church of God, Troy and his wife Marie, with their growing doubts, did what most of us former members of that cult did. We joined mainstream churches only to discover that they too were but mind control cults.
The inevitable result of spending a lifetime searching out "The Truth" is a most memorable prayer that Troy shares in his book. Call it a showdown. A contract made at baptism that is nullified and voided due to the inaction of a supposedly loving God.
If you were ever a member of an Armstrong church, or in one of the spin-offs, or if you are a kid in one of these cults, this book is a must read!

An interesting story about coming out of a cult and being true to oneself. Well worth reading! I highly recommend it.
Very well written. This book really opens your eyes to what children growing up with extremists (cults or not) have to deal with. This one just happens to deal with a man who is gay growing up in it, which made it even more difficult and harming for him. Glad to see that he was able to make it through. I think that Troy Fitzgerald did a fantastic job bringing us into his world so that we could experience it all through his words.
From the early 1930's until the late 1990's, a little known but surprisingly influential Worldwide Church of God preached a message of Biblical literalism and impending world destruction under the guise of spreading a gospel of "Good News" on a global scale. Reaching a membership of 140,000 or more and a circulation of over eight million in seven languages in the 1980s of its Plain Truth magazine, the church broadcast its message though its World Tomorrow television program that rivaled and eclipsed those of other mainstream televangelists at the same time, largely due to the vast air-time purchasing budgets the Church had at its disposal. Several college campuses, an international cultural foundation, a world-class performing arts center and a lavish lifestyle of global travel, expensive homes and staggering salaries for top-ranking ministers were among the trappings that supposedly exemplified and proved the blessings of God, paid for through the financial sacrifices of an often impoverished 20-30% tithe-paying membership. Many flocked to the Church for its offer of unique insights to Biblical prophecy, healthy lifestyles, and easy answers to complex and confusing Scriptures, all expounded in an array of high-quality, glossy publications, all offered free of charge. In the wake of its power and reach, the Church left a bloody trail of lives marked and ravaged by anxiety, despair, addictions, alcoholism and suicide, as adherents struggled to attain an unrealistic and unattainable Biblical ideal that prescribed a narrow and restrictive path which must be adhered to under punishment of disfellowshipment, ostracism, shunning by the church, friends and family and. ultimately, under threat of being cut off from God and receiving the punishment of eternal death in a final Lake of Fire.
Cults and Closets Coming Out of Chaos describe one man's struggle and victory growing up against the backdrop of the restrictive, punitive, and authoritarian Church of God environment that condemned same-sex relationships as abominations to God. For Fitzgerald, "coming out" is a two-fold experience, that of leaving the Church and discovering his personal identity and that of recognizing and celebrating his own sexual identity. This memoir is a story of the author's courage and brutal honesty, of introspection and compassion, of reconciliation, self-discovery and transformation.
While descriptions of the abuses --physical, mental, spiritual-- suffered by the author are painful to read, the story is nonetheless captivating and hard to put down. Fitzgerald describes the confusing and painful, --yet ultimately joyful -- process of coming to terms with his sexuality and the process of how he worked through these issues alongside a wife he loved and with whom he had three young children.
This book has a wide appeal to a variety of audiences, including clergy, lay leaders and youth pastors, as well as therapists, social workers and clinicians. Those who are interested in cults, extreme religious fundamentalism, spiritual abuse and abusive institutions or systems will find the book useful. Finally, anyone -individuals, parents, spouses-- struggling with issues of sexual orientation will find the author's story not only helpful, but inspiring and life-changing.
