Red River Lalita Tademy 9780755332694 Books

While this book is a novel, it depicts factual occurrences in the fairly recent, (1920,s and 30,s). This was, in terms of racial relations, a dark and shameful period. The attitudes and conduct of the white population are depicted as a sad reminder of the intolerance of many of our citizens. The really sad part of this is that many of these attitudes remain unchanged in so many people. This story, told from the perspective of the people who lived it, is a portrait of our nation's worst. A difficult book, but necessary for anyone who considers him/herself an American.

Red River Lalita Tademy 9780755332694 Books Reviews

I enjoyed the history. It was a slow start (unlike Cane River)...a good story
Lilita Tademy has presented a situation in history that has been misrepresented, or not talked about in public schools. Calling an 1873 massacre a "riot" in Colfax, LA is such a huge misnomer, and I appreciate her efforts to set the record straight. But this is much more a story of a family's choice to survive and to educate their community, even though fulfilling their rights brought trouble at every turn. Amazing story of endurance!
Another wonderful book which did not "cover up" any of her family history.

I feel this should be on a required reading list for all schools, preceded by Cane River.

"Proud to be a Tademy" or whatever a child's last name, should be the rally cry for all children, regardless of their race, religion or country of origin. Each child stands on the shoulders of their ancestors!
This book is wonderful. It's a family saga more then a book. It follows her 1st book "Cane River". It was very informative. I knew at once time the Repulican Party was the party for African-Americans. My great-mother told me how her mother was a Repulican. This book provides information from a personnal and historical perspective. It starts slow, but stay with it. I promise the end of the book is well worth the climb. It's one of those books where you know the people. You will love their character, strength and dignity. You'll want to read it again, you will share it with book lovers, and you will have to read "Cane River" . I almost forgot to mention the book was in wonderful condition. It was a Christmas gift and I shopped late. My book arrived Earlier than promised and it was Great price.
This book is amazing to be pieced together by the author when records were rather hard to find way back when. She has taken the facts available
and constructed a story of accuracy about her family that I bet is exactly correct if those missing facts were known. Had reconstruction been
handled differently maybe race relations, as they are today, would not be so divisive.
This is one of the best books I have read. That is about all I can say. What a strong family the author came from, and when I think about my ancestors, I realize through all the struggles and racism the Tademys and other African American families went through through out history. They were far more richer than me.
I loved the book, but hated the the bitter taste it left in my mouth. The author has a very captive style and way of telling the raw truth as it happened. Sometimes the truth is very painful, especially when it involves our ancestors and behaviors that we no longer understand. I think we're improving slowly, but looking in the mirror of our past can only help us to see where we still need to make changes.
Thank You for you truthfulness!
