This romance, which pairs a heroine who sells sex toys on TV for a living with a much more traditional, ex-navy-SEAL hero starts off pretty light but doesn't stay that way.

Well, maybe it doesn't start out that light, after all: the heroine, Mi, is being stalked by a deranged ex-con who became obsessed with her in prison while, at the same time, a sex-negative community organization is picketing the studio and working with the Texas state congress to have Mi's show banned. Because of all the tension, the owner of the TV studio calls in a favor and convinces the hero, Lucas, to guard Mi until things calm down.

Lucas is a great big brute of a man, but he's soft as pudding on the inside. He falls for Mi almost instantly, and every new twist and turn of the plot gives Lucas a chance to show what lengths he'll go to in order to keep her safe and happy. He couldn't be sweeter, really, except when Mi's in danger, at which point the 'scary mofo' side of his personality comes out.

Mi is a classic caretaker, and she's exhausted. She's worn herself out taking care of other people, especially her dangerously insane mother. We get flashes of Mi's bright personality, especially when she's on set selling the sex toys. You can tell what a vibrant, fun, really warm personality she has - and you can also see how badly damaged and drained she is. My heart really ached for her; she just spends so much time putting up with bad behavior from her brother, her boss, her mother and her co-worker. Lucas would be too domineering for a lot of people, but Mi needs a defender and he's just right for her.

I kind of wish they'd talked a little more - a lot of the romantic conflict in RUSH stems from miscommunication or lack of communication - but at the same time, a lot of the strongest moments hinged on feelings of shame and insecurity that can be so hard to talk about. When Mi visits the home of Lucas' very wealthy family, for example, I ached for her, and even if it would have helped, I knew why she didn't start up a conversation about how unworthy all that luxury made her feel.

Lucas has his own insecurities to deal with and it's really sweet and lovely to see him grow into his own feelings for Mi. He doubts his soft side, and Mi's faith in him so clearly helps him become a better and more whole person.

As a disclaimer, Beth is a friend. She's a great person, and I love the complex bag of tricks she's got going on here - the mix of humor, hot sex, suspense and pathos is pretty great. The intense, instant attraction between Mi and Lucas isn't my favorite thing, but pint-sized Mi and mack-truck Lucas make a pretty spicy pair, and I was on board once they were more settled into a relationship.

Rush Crimson Romance Beth Yarnall 9781440554230 Books Reviews

I wasn't sure what to expect in a book described as a romance between an ex-Navy SEAL and the host of a home shopping program that sells adult toys but what I got was a terrific suspense story with a tender love story woven throughout. Miyuki Price-Jones is being stalked and her cable TV show sabotaged. Her boss hires Lucas Vega to be her bodyguard. Lucas has his own way of protecting Mi and she's not always happy about it, particularly since she has secrets to hide, from him and from everyone else. But then, so does he. Inevitably, their attraction results in a hot and heavy romance but even after the stalker is revealed and the attraction acknowledged, the secrets could mean the end of the romance. Yarnall has created sympathetic characters in a hard-to-put-down book that makes the reader rush to find the Happily-Ever-After.
Lots of novice mistakes. The immediacy of intimate emotional feelings, at 4%. Luke doesn't know why he feels so overly protective of her. NEITHER DO WE. (I'm not shouting, I just can't do italics on my )

The rush towards something sexual that has more emotional weight than it should. At 14% kissing each other as if their lives depend on it. JUST BECAUSE YOU WRITE THAT THEY COULDN'T UNDERSTAND IT DOESN'T MAKE THE ACTIONS ACCEPTABLE. HE'S HER BODYGUARD! He doesn't even ATTEMPT to fight off the feelings. It's too early. (Remember, not shouting)

At 16%, he reminded himself they'd only meet that morning because he could hardly believe it, after all they had been through. THEY HADN'T BEEN THROUGH ANYTHING YET! A rock through a back window does not equate EVERYTHING.

So then I skip to about 85% and I get the while story. And I'm done.

Good luck Ms. Yarnell.
Can I just say that this book surprised me? In a super awesome heart pounding, heart wrenching, turn the page faster kind of way.

Miyuki Price-Jones is an onscreen personality that sells sex toys in her hot librarian with glasses get-up. She's good at her job but her every day life isn't at all sexy nor is it all good. There's secrets on top of secrets on top of secrets that she wants to remain buried and her life suddenly in danger doesn't help with the whole keeping secrets thing.

Enter tall, dark and oh so broody Lucas Vega, bodyguard extraordinaire. Of course, he doesn't want to really be there but he owes a friend a favor and he's good at this protecting people kind of thing. Not so much with the whole protecting his heart scenario.

Between the secrets, getting shot at, crazy fan mail from a particular inmate who writes in detail as to what he'll do to Mi once he gets out, Lucas and Mi try to fight their growing attraction as well as slowly trust each other so that they can finally get to the bottom of this crazy train before one more person ends up dead.

Favorite Quote
With his sudden intake of air came the recognition that this tiny woman could do him more harm than a grenade strapped to his chest. It scared him even more that he might be willing to take that risk.

Overall A strong solid debut from Beth Yarnall full of twists, turns, adrenaline pumping action and heart stopping, oh em gee smexiness. I just want to say that Beth Yarnall definitely knows her sexy and down and dirty. The chemistry between Lucas and Mi is smolderingly hot and I waited with bated breath as to whether or not something dangerous or totally hot was going to happen when I flipped the page. If you like your romance fast, hot, hard and a giant helping of suspense, this book is most definitely a 'must read'. If not, then pick it up for the smexing cause it will get your palms sweaty, your knees pressing together and a nice cold shower sounds better than putting ice down your shirt.
