Young Joseph has returned from war and taken over as his father's heir apparent but he holds quite the extreme views - going so far as to invite one of the holy rollers to town. That preacher, a one eyed man, with a small following has taken to preaching against prostitutes in the city. Then they start being killed viciously and with Bible verses left behind. I really enjoyed The Midwive's Tale, the first book in this series, and downloaded this one as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. It is a wonderful piece of historical fiction and an intriguing mystery that I read in one setting because I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend it and will be watching for this author's next book.
Sam Thomas is a brilliant author. His work is always a joy to read because he has developed his characters and setting well, and the plot is always excellently executed. Very well done, sir. Very well done.
LOVED this book - lots of twists and turns - the second of this authors now 3 books - the first couple chapters get you caught up on what happened in book one but it goes quickly to the fun new stuff.... and book one is also worth reading - especially if you like history or mystery or both! waiting for book three now! l
This book provided interesting background to the subsequent novel in the series. I enjoyed both. On its own, the book provides insight into the life and times.
I absolutely love Sam Thomas' books. This is a great book and one that stays on your mind for a long time. When you read this book, you are not reading the same old, same old plot. It is imaginative and very interesting. If you enjoy English history, I believe you would certainly enjoy this book and the series. I know that I did and am so glad I discovered Sam Thomas.
This story has very graphic descriptions of horrible injuries perpetrated on the harlots. Also, way more religious preaching by the visiting minister than is compelling, at least to me.

If you aren't bothered by those things, the writing is good, and it is interesting to know more about the culture, customs and restrictions, especially of women, of the 17th century in England. The author has an innovative idea for the protagonist/investigator and the characters are well drawn.
This is the second of the Midwife series by Sam Thomas. The protagonist is a noble widow who is a certified midwife in Yorkshire during the Oliver Cromwell civil war. She solves murders. Cleverly and over time. I liked her in the first book, and I like her more in this second. Well written, historically accurate so you learn something along the way, and engaging.
